Description

The Southeast Massachusetts Institute, Utilizing Your Local Ecosystem as Laboratories for Investigations will offer educators the opportunity to explore real-world phenomena through hands-on, minds-on investigations, live discussion, small group work, and visits to sites around the Southeast Massachusetts region. Throughout the course, educators will integrate the theory and practice of phenomena and inquiry-based education with the Science and Engineering Practices and make connections across disciplinary core ideas in science. Partners from the Lloyd Center for the Environment, Round the Bend Farm, and the New Bedford Whaling Museum, as well as a guest speaker for the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance, will engage participants in data collection and analysis, citizen science, and ecosystem exploration. Participants will develop standards-aligned unit a plan and inquiry-based investigations appropriate for their teaching context.
